Workforce Solutions of Central Texas Gears Up for Third Year of “Wrenches to Wheels” with New Community Partnership

BELTON, Texas – Workforce Solutions of Central Texas is excited to announce the return of its summer initiative, Wrenches to Wheels: Building Bikes and Building Skills, now entering its third year with fresh partnerships and an even stronger impact on local youth.
This summer, Holland ISD (June 3) and Rockdale ISD (June 12) will host the program, which gives incoming 7th grade students a unique opportunity to learn mechanical, problem-solving, and safety skills — all while building and keeping their own bicycle.
Thanks to Atmos Energy, who funded this year’s bicycles, and Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center, who provided bike helmets and will lead safety demonstrations, students will gain both hands-on experience and vital safety training.
“Atmos Energy proudly supports Workforce Solutions of Central Texas through the Wrenches to Wheels program,” said Tammie Bowman, spokesperson for Atmos Energy. “We are passionate about making a difference in the areas we serve, and our partnership with the Wrenches to Wheels program will help us cultivate the next generation of leaders.”
About the Program
Wrenches to Wheels is designed to help students build more than just bikes, it helps them build confidence, teamwork, and foundational career skills. With guidance from community mentors, students learn to use tools, follow instructions, and troubleshoot problems — skills that are essential in both technical trades and everyday life.
Each student completes the program with:
- A custom-built bike they assembled themselves
- A safety-certified helmet
- A demonstration on proper helmet use and bike safety
- Increased exposure to STEM-based career paths and positive adult mentorship
Why It Matters
This initiative fills a crucial gap during summer months by engaging youth in meaningful, skill-building experiences. It prepares students not only for school, but for future success in the workforce.
Wrenches to Wheels is made possible by the Jobs Y’all Grant from the Texas Workforce Commission through the Student Occupational Awareness and Recognition (SOAR) program at Workforce Solutions of Central Texas. Continued support from community partners like Atmos Energy and Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center ensures that this program continues to grow and serve students across the region.
