The Shared Work Program is a TWC Rapid Response effort providing an alternative to mass layoffs—it is intended to assist employers/businesses in Texas who are experiencing a work slow-down (or possible shut down), as we currently are with Covid19.
The program is employer driven, meaning they have flexibility to implement their own plans (whatever might work best for them) as long as it meets certain state approved criteria.
Shared work allows employers to supplement their employee’s wages lost because of reduced work hours with partial unemployment benefits. Under the program, employers can reduce normal weekly work hours for employees in an affected unit by at least 10% but not more than 40%; shared work UI benefits are payable to employees who qualify for, and participate in, the program (workers may choose not to participate). Employees who qualify will receive both wages and shared work unemployment benefits.
