Youth Programs

WingSpan

Wingspan is the WIOA Youth Program administered by Workforce Solutions of Central Texas serving in-school (age 14-21) and out-of-school (age 16 to 24) youth and young adults living in Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, Mills, and San Saba counties. Partnering with school districts, colleges, and employers, we identify high-demand occupations in the region to develop curriculum and target training.

Career Guidance

Planning for a new, different, or better career can feel overwhelming. The more you know about your skills and preferences, the more prepared you are to search for jobs that are a good fit, write resumes, present yourself to potential employers in interviews, and find the career that best suits you. 

When you visit one of our Career Centers, our Workforce Specialists will help you learn about various occupations available in the Central Texas region that fit with your unique career preferences, skills, interests and values. We provide current Labor Market Information to give you the opportunity to research in-demand occupations, salaries, career options, required education and training/skills levels.

Job-Skills Courses

Workforce Solutions of Central Texas offers free online courses for individuals who would like to learn how to look for a job, interview and network, become more financially literate, or use their skills and experience in a new and different way.

The SOAR Program offers many workshops designed to assist students in career development and preparation. The workshops cover the employability skills that employers are looking for when assessing potential job candidates. It gives students a better understanding of key soft skills and how to be workplace ready. for success when pursuing their career.

The words career, job, and occupation are often used interchangeably. The SOAR Program helps students identify career pathways and the education that is needed to accomplish their goals through many activities. Texas Career Check

Texas Career Check is an exploration tool built for students to research different Careers and Schools. This system provides an intuitive way to look for information and descriptions on occupations and schools that the student may be interested in. This tool brings together a wealth of information from various sources maintained by different entities. While these independent entities are informative on their own, they are usually difficult to navigate and the required data is hard to find. Texas Career Check relieves this issue with an easy to navigate website.

My Next Move is an interactive tool for job seekers and students to learn more about their career options. The site has tasks, skills, salary information, and more for over 900 different careers. Users can find careers through keyword search; by browsing industries that employ different types of workers; or through the O*NET Interest Profiler, a tool that offers personalized career suggestions based on a person’s interests and level of work experience.

The Workplace Readiness Assessment bridges the Gap between hard and soft skills by fostering important skills such as planning, attitude, and social skills. This assessment requires a referral from a teacher or counselor.

Events that allow students to interact with major employers to understand job opportunities and the available careers in Central Texas.

The SOAR Team can facilitate a visit to a major employer in the region to help students to experience the world of work and the industries in their region.

This platform gives students the opportunity to discover, plan and pursue their careers with a unique video-based career planning platform. The interactive tools help students develop their career paths.

Texas Internship Challenge

The Texas Internship Challenge is a recommendation from the Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Education Agency and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to the Governor’s Office, as part of the Tri-Agency Initiative, challenging industry and employer partners to offer more paid internships for Texas students.

– Birth Certificate
– Social Security Card
– Picture ID
– Transcript/Diploma/GED
– Proof of income for the past 6 months

– Be a citizen or non-citizen authorized to work in the United States
– Meet Military Selective Service registration requirements
– Meet income level requirements

Teacher Externship Program

Workforce Solutions of Central Texas in cooperation with the Central Texas Regional P20 Council will be providing teacher externship experiences each summer. Teacher Externships offer a unique professional development opportunity connecting the classroom to the workplace. They provide an experience in which teachers spend time in a workplace to learn through direct experience about trends, skill requirements and opportunities in industries related to their subject in order to enrich and strengthen their teaching and bring relevance to student learning.

 

Teacher externships offer a professional development experience that is often transformative for educators and their students. All students should be prepared for college and/or careers; therefore, teachers must constantly update their own knowledge and skills about current workplace practices, requirements, and tools by gaining an “on the ground” understanding of economic and career trends that will affect their students. The externship experience helps teachers connect classroom content with students’ future career interests and helps students develop both the academic and technical skills required in the world they are preparing to enter.

 

The purpose of a teacher externship is to engage in activities in business and industry, and/or service-based organizations, to learn how classroom content and learning strategies are applied in the workplace. Teachers improve their pedagogical practices by incorporating new methods, labor market information, and employment skills that meet current industry standards. The educational goal of an externship is to increase a teacher’s ability to connect theory and practice and bring an understanding of workplace practices and policies (e.g. problem solving methods, practical applications of theory, leadership concepts) into the classroom, thus increasing the relevance of student learning.

Uplift! Program

Since 2011, the State of Texas has made youth in or formerly in foster care a priority population over all other equally qualified individuals except eligible veterans.  The Uplift program is intended to provide resources and information on foster care to Boards, Transition Centers, and other partners who are helping youth in or formerly in foster care achieve and sustain economic prosperity.

Workforce Solutions of Central Texas was recognized and received a performance award for their work with foster youth.   The award was for serving youth who are in foster care and youth who have left the foster care system. The program is primarily focused on assisting youth who are aging out of Foster Care. The program is part of the Wingspan initiative and is called “Uplift!”

Uplift! Will identifies and creates partnerships with similarly-focused organizations. The partners include Independent School Districts, Community Colleges, Social Services Agencies Serving Foster Youth and Community Organizations. The end goal is to provide eligible youth with a broad spectrum of services from multiple partners that ultimately supports stability and leads to successful employment.

Summer Earn & Learn Program

Ready for a summer job?

The Summer Earn & Learn program provides students with disabilities work readiness training and paid work experience in Texas. The program is a partnership between TWC, Local Workforce Development Boards and Texas Workforce Solutions-Vocational Rehabilitation Services (TWS-VRS). Students can earn money at a part-time summer job while receiving work skills training!
