Helping educators prepare today's students for tomorrow's careers.

The overarching goal of the Central Texas Teacher Externship Program is to give teachers an understanding of work requirements so they can develop/revise curriculum that links learning and work demands.

Externships for Teachers

Workforce Solutions of Central Texas, in partnership with the P-20 Central Texas Regional Council, has secured funding to select 50 middle school and high school teachers from the Central Texas Workforce region (Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, Mills, and San Saba counties) to participate in a teacher externship for 5 days during the summer. The experience will be followed by participants presenting results in the fall from their classroom experiences at local P-20 Regional Council, Workforce Board, School Board, or community meetings.  The model promotes real-world of work understanding and motivates teachers to create curriculum-based, work-related education opportunities that are taught in a project-based classroom setting.

Educator Registration

Potential middle and high school teachers will be identified through a P-20 Central Texas Regional Council and the Education Outreach Program (SOAR). The goal is to give an optimal blend of school sizes, subjects, teaching experience, academic/technical courses, etc., Candidates will be initially selected for participation.

  • Teachers must be currently teaching classes
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, eligible to work in the United States, and if male and born after 1960, be registered with selective services. Verify HERE.
  • Must complete 18-24 hours at assigned employer in June or July
  • Complete curriculum and post-externship survey
  • First-time participants will be given priority in selection, but previous participants may apply.

One Week Externship – $600 (June)

Presentation – $100 (by December)

During the teachers’ orientation, participants will meet with Workforce Solutions of Central Texas staff and review program requirements and expectations.  Staff will confirm each individual teacher’s interest in participating in the program.

Workforce Solutions of Central Texas staff identify employers, site requirements, and document formal agreement to participate.

As part of the Externship, a selected contractor will facilitate teachers’ initial efforts to revise or create curriculum during day five of the externship. At a minimum, teachers will leave the meeting with an outline for a project-based lesson plan. Participating teachers earn an incentive for documenting and presenting the results from their classroom experiences at local P-20 Regional Council, Workforce Board, School Board, or community meetings.

Externship Description

Selected middle school and high school teachers will participate in a teacher externship experience for 5 days during the summer.

The first half day, Workforce Solutions of Central Texas staff guide participants in completing required paperwork, provide a program orientation to ensure the participants fully understand program expectations, and provide an overview of the Central Texas labor market. The meeting will end with employer assignments and a briefing on workplace expectations for “visiting” externship teachers.

Participants will be on the worksite for three days.  While on-site, participants will be exposed to job shadowing and hands on activities that give them insight into job and industry-specific workplace expectations and skills requirements. At the end of three days on-site, they will re-convene at the local Workforce Center for the final day.

On the final day, externship participants will complete a program evaluation and discuss their experiences in a debriefing session.  Participants will be encouraged to describe program best practices and identify opportunities for improvement. Also on Day 5, a selected contractor will facilitate teachers’ initial efforts to revise or create curriculum. They will provide an in-depth training on integrating work skills using project-based learning.  At a minimum, teachers will leave the meeting with an outline for a project-based lesson plan.
